That's right, another UF game studies conference has come to an end. I want to post some more extended followup commentary when I get a chance to recover (and anyone else who wants to post their thoughts should certainly do so), but as we're plowing ahead with the Comics Conference portion of the weekend, this is the first chance I've had to sit and type for a few minutes. We're in the break before our first comics keynote, Jeff Smith (creator of Bone), so if you happen to be in Gainesville, you've got about an hour to get here.
Nick has apparently been much more efficient than the rest of us at getting his notes online, and he's already posted two reports at Grand Text Auto on the presentations.
For now, I'll just say it was an amazing event, and like most conferences I go to – particularly those for which I have constant minor logistical or technical tasks to perform – my only regret is that I didn't have more time to spend meeting and talking with our guests and presenters. I think the theme of world building allowed people to see some interesting connections among otherwise rather differently oriented scholarship, and I think finding a good, solid theme to build a conference around has helped us be successful in all three of the years we've been doing this. I can comment with a bit more distance this year since I was much less involved in the actual planning and running of the event than in years past, so I'd like to publicly thank Lisa Dusenberry and Phil Sandifer for doing a great job putting it all together. While I'm at it I should definitely also thank our keynotes Nick Montfort and Dave Szulborski for their excellent and insightful presentations on their current work as it relates to world building.
I'll post some more once I wind down, and for those of you who wanted to be here but couldn't, I did manage (I think) to get video of all of the presentations which I'll be putting online in the coming days or weeks.
