Quibble: Evangelicals

Submitted by Scott (not verified) – Thu, 2006 – 11 – 09 15:47

First, thanks Zach for a great, funny review and first look at this game.

As an "evangelical," I'd like to balance the previous comment from Carl. Like the terms "Christmas," "Easter," "Trinity," and "Stations of the Cross," the word "Rapture" is in fact not in Scripture. Please be aware that whether the NAME of a particular doctrine is listed in Scripture is not a criterion in any Biblical academic arena for judging how fundamental or true that doctrine is to the Christian faith. If this were the case, we would need to immediately notify Santa and the Easter Bunny that Christmas and Easter are now exclusively under their jurisdiction...

Second, I am a bit concerned with the tone of the "small number of theologians...almost no acceptance outside a subset of evangelical Protestant churches." That's what--like, 10 churches? Maybe 12? Sounds like it from the tone. Actually evangelicals worldwide make up around 850 million people. They are typically "orthodox protestants" who emphasize the gospel message of reformation leaders like Martin Luther and John Calvin. Stated another way, "salvation" comes only by God's grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone. So that's an evangelical for ya. All 850 million of us. Anyway, just wanted to shout out a quibble from the other side. I believe that Carl is correct that literal "rapture" teaching did originate as late as the 19th century, but I would say that the teaching is more widely accepted among Christian believers than his tone might imply.

Keep those good reviews coming!
