Damnit, this thing ate my response.

Anyway, I had pointed out that there are many in-game hints to make this puzzle much easier than is implied by Old Man Murray. For instance, examining the cat gets Gabe to say, "Hmm..Lots of thick, black, fur." Any seasoned adventurer would realize that this is a clue: You've got to find a way to get that fur. You get similar hints by exploring different parts of the puzzle. Heck, almost every solution is foreshadowed by the dialogue (assuming someone doesn't get impatient and skip it).

Still, this puzzle is a bit ludicrous. I am reminded strongly of one of the opening puzzles of the Longest Journey.
